BP Claims Map

Four years after the worst environmental disaster in the history of the Gulf, thousands of individuals and businesses are waiting for British Petroleum to reimburse them for their losses. Although the company set up a claims system through a class action settlement in 2012, it has now challenged the terms, saying companies that were not affected by the spill have been getting payoffs. Attorneys and accountants familiar with the process claim that BP is delaying in hopes that claimants will give up.

The interactive map and table below highlight business claims activity — submitted, approved and paid — through that class action settlement, which phased out the Gulf Coast Claims Facility program that handled such payments until summer 2012. Hover your mouse cursor over a county on the map — or a row in the table — to get more information about that area. Use the dropdown boxes beneath the map to focus on a particular state (or states), a county or parish, payment activity and more, or use the dropdown filters in combination to narrow your results still further.
